The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has proposed nine new airports to the Ministry of Transport as part of the national airport plan. As per the proposal, the recommendation is to add airports in Yen Bai, Ha Tinh, Quang Ngai, Dak Nong, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Kon Tum, Tay Ninh, and Khanh Hoa provinces. CAA's efforts in working directly with ten provinces resulted in this proposal. Moc Chau in Son La province was eliminated from the final proposal due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Vietnam will have 28 airports by 2030 and 31 by 2050, according to the airport plan that the Ministry of Transport sent to the government. Airports in remote areas and islands or localities with large potential for tourism development will be prioritised as per Pham Huu Son, General Director of TEDI. There are currently 22 airports in Vietnam.
